My Husky & I…

Huskystar that is…will be very busy the next couple weeks….so many sewing projects to do, so little time.  Actually, a lot of other projects on the go as well.  There is one knitting project, a whole lot of house de-cluttering going on, and let’s not forget my newest hobby ~ Bob the loom.

I think I need to get a day planner and start blocking hours for each project, as well as regular chores and work.

Meanwhile, here is a snippet of what I am working on….not included in this pic is a blue floral print for a blouse for … Read more...

Time To De-clutter..

As I wander from room to room in my house, it hits me….where does all this ‘stuff’ come from???  Slowly, almost insidiously, things start piling up in the corners of the rooms, or under tables, or falling out on you as you open the linen closet.

clutterbustingTime to get organized.  Time to pull out the Reuse bins, the Toss bins and the Recycle bins and sort the accumulations of what-not’s and doo-dad’s.  I have enough what-not’s and doo-dad’s already.  I normally do this ritual at the beginning of the year, and I already did do it at the beginning of … Read more...

Twill Tea Towels

I think I can… I think I can… I think I can….

I think I may finally be ready to start weaving an actual project.  I have been playing with sock yarn on the loom for the past couple weeks which has allowed me to develop a rhythm as well as give me lots of opportunity to learn the finer points of weaving (and the sometimes sorry looking results while traversing the learning curve).

After straining my mental capacity learning how to calculate yarn requirements for each project to be developed on the loom, it was time to sit down … Read more...

My First Weaving Project

Actually, it isn’t really a “Project”, but more of a “Lesson”.  After spending over 2 hours painstakingly setting up the loom with regular sock fingering yarn, I sat down in front of Bob, instruction book in one hand, a case of beer in the other to calm my nerves.

Ok, no actual beer was handy, so I made do with a glass of water.  I know, so unlike me.  Anyway, I wound a bobbin with yarn and popped it inside the shuttle.  With my feet at the treadles, I pushed each one to make the frames lift in turn, watching … Read more...

Learning To Weave = Math???

I hate math.

I have always hated math.

Numbers scare the bejeebies out of me.  Give me good old letters any day.  I excelled at English, grammar and spelling in school.  Math was just along for the ride, and not a very good one at that.  So what does this have to do with weaving? Well, every piece of weaving you want to do will have math involved.  If I had known of this ahead of time, I may have thought harder before I pounced on the opportunity to buy Bob.

There are formulas to arrive at your sett, e.p.i., … Read more...

Renewing Old Treasures

A month ago I headed up to the far north on a day trip to visit my aunt and uncle (the one from the Vushka post) and took along daughter and her husband.  Located a little over 2 hours north of North Bay, ON, the drive was a scenic one as Hwy 11 took us through rugged, rocky terrain dotted with lakes and small cottages as well as passing through small Northern towns that time seems to have stood still for.

Temagami is one of those towns.  If it wasn’t for the modern marina on the west side of Hwy … Read more...

Meet Bob

He is a hard worker.  Never complains.  Doesn’t leave dirty socks on the floor or leave the toilet seat up.  Nor does he run for the beer fridge at the 5 o’clock whistle.

Loom

Sounds like a dream doesn’t he?  I bet you had a Bob just like I do.

Why the name Bob you ask?  Well, most people that acquire a loom give it a name, and most often that name is a feminine one.  A friend of mine asked what I was going to call her…..but my husband came up with the name instead.  Therefore it is a ‘He’, … Read more...

The Needles Are Still Clicking Along…

* Please note I am editing this blog post because I goofed up.  The reason behind the initial post was two-fold.  First, to document how much of a knitting junkie I have returned to being in such a short time and two….to win up to $200.00 in goodies from The Interweave Store.  You see, Knitting Daily has a contest going on (Blog it to Win it) right now where you show and tell your knitting project(s)/story on your blog to win free stuff.   I love free stuff.  Who doesn’t love free stuff? Who wouldn’t love to pick … Read more...

A Loom With A View

Yes, a new hobby has been born.  As if I don’t have enough of them….gardening, sewing, knitting, cooking, fishing, to name a few…so I am adding a new one to the resume.

Weaving

On a Loom

The old-fashioned way of making fabric.

I have no idea at the moment how to do it, but that is the fun of trying out new things.  I can picture myself in the not so distant future retired, sitting in the front room of the cottage overlooking the ever changing landscape of the lake, weaving colourful projects for friends and family alike.

I do … Read more...

Can You Spot It?

While on our trip to the States last week for the much enjoyed NASCAR race, we also took some time to get some shopping done.  Shopping in the States is fun – mainly for 2 reasons…1. stuff is cheaper and 2. there are many different things available there that are not available back in Canada.

I don’t know anyone that crosses the border only to sight see and NOT shop, I would suggest to those folks that do not want to shop that they should have their heads examined by a relative of Sigmund Freud.

Anyway, we wandered into a … Read more...
