When Do You Put Up Your Christmas Tree?

WAIT!   Don’t Shoot Me!

Just a poll here, no need to get all snippy…..

Even though Halloween was just last week, the retail establishments have been hauling out the Christmas stuff for over a month now (especially Costco, they started mid-August for pete’s sake).  So this brings me to ask you, when do you get serious about decorating for Christmas?

I have a cousin that used to put away her Halloween decorations and immediately haul out the Christmas baubles and commence with Santa Zone on November 1st.  I haven’t been over to her place in a long while, hopefully she … Read more...

Happy 1st Day of November!  Only 54 days left until Christmas…have you started your shopping yet?  If you are like me…hell no.. It is way too early to start even thinking about anything related to Christmas, besides, Halloween was last night and there are mountains of chocolate and candies to be eaten still.

Today is also one of the special days for those folks living in Mexico and other countries around the world.  Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) where families celebrate and honour the lives of those that have died.  It typically commences on October 31st and … Read more...

Monster Mash

In years gone by, when the kids were younger, I used to get excited about Halloween.  Not only for the opportunity of snitching chocolate bars and candy from their stashes (I am sure they knew I was pilfering now and then) but also for creating and making their costumes, carving pumpkins and decorating the house.

Since both kids are now grown and gone, most of the fun has also gone with them.  Except for the music.  There are some Halloween songs that I still get a kick out of (movies too, Halloween isn’t Halloween without The Rocky Horror Picture Show), … Read more...

Civic Holiday…

Is today.

We get an extra valuable long weekend in a short Canadian Summer.

But exactly what IS Civic Holiday?

It depends where you live for starters as not all Provinces recognize it as a Statutory Holiday while some do.  Some don’t  recognize it as anything other than a normal Monday in August.

It goes by a variety of names too….in British Columbia, it is British Columbia Day, in New Brunswick, it is New Brunswick Day and in Saskatchewan, it is Saskatchewan Day. In Nova Scotia, it is celebrated as Natal Day, but is not recognized as a … Read more...

Diary of a Homestead Vacation

With technical issues beyond my control no matter how much I stomped my feet in a temper tantrum, I conceded defeat to the telephone line Gods and drank a two-four of beer to drown my sorrows.  Maybe not the entire two-four, but 6 is pretty close isn’t it? How about we went on vacation instead, definitely more plausible a scenario…and I can neither confirm nor deny the consumption of beer.

frazzled

With nothing to do in cyber space, hubby and I dashed off to the Homestead for some well deserved R&R before his 3 week shutdown commenced mid-July.  This being one … Read more...

My ‘UnPlanned’ Summer Vacation

Unplanned? Yes, totally unplanned… Ok, part of that statement up there is a fib.  I do admit, I DID announce I was going on a ‘Gone Fishin’ trip back on June something or other and it’s been so long since I last posted that I actually forget the date (please don’t remind me either, I feel bad enough already), but that post was more for a ‘planned event’ as there was an upcoming web server technical issue that I knew was going to put a kink in my well laid summer blog plans.

Well….this so-called ‘issue’ turned into a full … Read more...

WooHoo!

It is time for another Long Weekend in Canada!
This coming Monday marks our Country’s 146th Birthday.

Pretty much half the population of Southern Ontario will jam the 3 major highways heading north on Friday afternoon, all desperate to escape the city and relax in their quiet, lakeside settings with plenty of food, fun and frivolity (and beer too).

We are no different, except we will be leaving at the crack of dawn Friday to avoid the ‘Indianapolis 400’….better known as Highway 400 heading north from Toronto to Barrie.  The worst stretch of highway for traffic in the summertime … Read more...

The Best of May

May has come and gone like a flash.  A welcome one for me though as the weather really didn’t cooperate for us here in Ontario.  Actually, April was really miserable too…combine a miserable, cold, wet April with another miserable, cold, wet May with only a few days of sun provided to keep my sanity, meant for a very cranky Homesteader….

I WANT HEAT AND SUN!

There, now that that is out of my system…can we move on to summer please?

There was a glorious long weekend in May for both Canuck’s and Americans alike, albeit spanning 2 different weekends, which … Read more...
