How Did This Happen?

Normally I am a very neat, organized and tidy to a fault person.  It could be said I am OCD about keeping a tidy house.  Just ask my kids/husband or any random neighbour off the street.  They will all tell you not to even try moving anything a millimeter in my house lest you incur my wrath.

This is my living room and kitchen in there current state.  It is driving me absolutely BANANAS.

New Year’s Resolutions…

Are not for everyone.  Those that have actual willpower are the only ones that make them come true.  The rest of us are doomed to failure year in and year out.

Sure…you wake up New Year’s Day, head pounding from all the evil swill you drank the night before and you swear, totally swear, on a stack of bibles taller than Rob Ford, that you will N-E-V-E-R drink again…

Until later that night…

I gave up making New Year’s resolutions long ago.  I am now at the age where I have realized I need to stop beating myself up trying … Read more...

What Did You Do Over The Holidays?

Did you go skiing?  Mountain climbing? How about a Cruise? Or were you stuck at home with irritable family members?

If you are older than 14, then you know the Holidays are nothing short of a royal pain in the a$$.  I for one, am thrilled that they are now over.  The 2-3 weeks leading up to Christmas Day are the worst.  The mad shoppers, the crazed mall parking lot drivers, the people grasping for the last 25lb turkey in the market…out of your own buggy even.  The lack of sleep, the constant apron tied to your waist as you … Read more...

Happy New Year!

Well thank goodness 2013 is over. It has not been a stellar year for our family (too many illnesses) and Mother Nature flexed her muscles giving us a gigantic headache with the dock and water issues, so we are anxiously looking forward to 2014 hoping it will be a boring year….don’t think we can take anymore ‘events’ like the ones seen in 2013.

All the best to everyone for a Safe, Happy & Prosperous New Year!

Going Back In Time

A couple months ago I was up at my Aunt and Uncle’s for a visit and spotted an old-fashioned drying rack in their quaint kitchen.  I love old stuff like that and knew I just HAD to have one….so I thought to myself…”Self…this would be the perfect item for the Homestead when days are not suitable to hang stuff outside (or when it snows either)”.

I then unleashed my googling expert hubby to find one for me.  He did, on eBay.  Not having ever purchased anything on eBay before, we were given a crash course in how it operates.  Basically, … Read more...

Next Weeks Menu

BRRRR!!!

Last week we were steadfastly sticking to grilling (after all, we are supposed to be hardy Canadians), but waking up this morning to -14C (8F) and looking out over a frozen expanse of lake has me tossing out all BBQ plans and opting for a week of hot oven meals.

This week will see everything cooked in the oven, although I am still trying to figure out how to cook a Reuben in the oven.  I may have to settle for the stove top method.  Speaking of Reuben’s, this will be my first attempt at making them.  Hubby loves … Read more...

Top 10 Hints That Winter Has Arrived…

In case you don’t know how to read a calendar (or simply do not have one), I will run down the top 10 hints to let you know that Winter has arrived.  If you come up with at least 5 of these, chances are Winter is in your neck of the woods.

One ~ The butter that sits on the counter is rock solid.

Two ~ You  have to bribe the dog to go outside to do his business.

Three ~ The mice are cozying up to the fireplace in the family room,

What Was I Thinking?!

Apparently I wasn’t.

Like when I was knitting a pair of mittens a few weeks ago and forgot to knit the thumb gusset.  I soon realized that there isn’t a market for thumbless mittens and ripped it out to start over.  This is known as a ‘DUH’ moment in knitting.

Last Friday’s post was also a  major ‘DUH’ moment, which saw an overwhelming vote in favour of the colour header picture over the black and white one.

Therefore, I humbly accept the publics preference and have brought the colour header back, albeit with a slightly different picture, ok, more than … Read more...

New Look For The Homestead?

Take a look at the top of the page…notice anything different?

I have been playing with Photoshop (as a result of stumbling on an app on my smartphone) and loved the idea of transforming my main header pic into a pencil drawing.  It is more than just changing to a black and white photo, you manipulate the doodads and whatknots (technical terms) to arrive at something that can be *almost* considered an actual penciled drawing…

This was the previous photo…
