What to do when your Cilantro Bolts…

Other than pull your hair out, scream in frustration, angrily rip it out by its roots and burn it in a bonfire….ok, that may be extreme….but if you are fond of growing herbs (like me), than take heed to what I am about to tell you.  Cilantro, Basil, Sage, etc. and often many lettuces have an annoyingly bad habit of doing something called ‘bolting’ when it gets too hot outside.

Bolting refers to the plant slowing down leaf production in favour of flowering and setting seed.  The plants main focus (after leaf production for food/growth) is to generate flowers which … Read more...

My Garden’s First Haircut…

Surprisingly, after only a mere couple weeks of warm weather, parts of my garden needed a good sheering off.  Like sheep at the end of winter.  My resident Sage plant below was totally over-crowding my newly planted Tomatillos and due to the instant 30C heat in our neck of the woods, promptly started flowering…something it usually saves itself for in July.

So I took a few of the flowers and put them in a vase in the living room – the leaves give off that nice ‘sage-y’ smell and they really do look good as a cut flower arrangement.  I … Read more...

My Publishing Debut….

I know what you are thinking, she already ‘debuted’ a couple weeks ago…she must be losing it…But stick with me, this is different…this is for REAL publishing in a REAL magazine!

Being a Realtor® here in Canada, we have access to some pretty awesome publications that are available to us and one of my favourites is REM – Real Estate Magazine (Canada’s premier business publication for the real estate industry, and yes, I took that from their site).

It is published once a month and when it comes in, I grab my cuppa tea and head over to the comfy … Read more...

Shock and Awe….Is Bad for Plants…

Yes, it is quite easy to ‘Shock’ your plants in preparation for their final place in the garden.  There is a transition period whereby you slowly ease your plants into the great outdoors a little at a time to get them used to the harshness of the world.

When plants spend time in your sunny window in the early spring or under grow lights, they are shielded from the burning rays of the sun that can scorch their delicate leaves and stress the plant.

To acclimatize them to the outdoors, start by taking your plants outside to a shady spot, … Read more...

A Gardener’s Canvas

I hope all you gardening folks are as excited as I am this Spring.  My living room window (and half the floor area) are already crowded with plants just itching to get their roots into the outdoor garden soil.

Now hold on to your green thumb for a sec,  before you get the shovel out, you need to create a layout of your garden patch.

This is where I have come across a jim-dandy web-tool to help you do just that.  No more writer’s cramp and numerous crumpled pieces of paper tossed aside while you try to perfect your ‘to … Read more...

Chic Garden Tool Organizer

HOORAY! It is Spring time! (yes, I hate winter and have been waiting for what seems like an eternity for the warm weather to get here).  With the arrival of Spring, my thoughts turn to gardening and I anxiously throw on my ‘garden grubbies’ and old sneakers and head out to the shed to dust off my garden tools…. but I can’t find them…I swore I put them right there on the shelf in the shed last Fall.  But the mysterious Winter Gremlins must have hid them on me, or my spouse ‘borrowed’ them to change the oil in the … Read more...

Jack and the Beanstalk…

Or perhaps the Giant Redwood and the Sugar Snap Pea Shoot….however you want to compare, THIS is the difference between my tomato plants and my pepper plants at the moment….
DSC05864
This Poblano Pepper plant is only about 5″ high, the Tom Tomato immediately behind it is about 2′ feet high and you could literally watch it grow if you sat in the living room long enough.  Did I mention that Pepper plants are slow growers? on the other hand, the toms look they are on steroids and I have done nothing different in raising the two types…nature of the garden

The Living Room Greenhouse

It’s a JUNGLE out there I tell you!  You should see my greenhouse, ahem, I mean, my living room right now, ok, hang on while I get the camera out…..

There? crazy isn’t it? Normally I have only 3 plants on the floor, one is my Grapefruit Tree (thank you to my daughter as it was a birthday present a few yrs ago), another is a Peace Lily and the third is my Rosemary bush that is currently going crazy.  But as you can plainly see, my living room is now crowded with over 40 pots in various sizes of

Life’s Little Failures….

Ok, they may seem little to you, but I for one am devastated that my dang chives are refusing to sprout!  On February 7th,  I planted 5 kinds of peppers, 2 kinds of toms, parsley, cilantro and the chives.  Now over a month later, I re-planted more chive seeds on March 22nd…I know it is only the 29th today, but MAN, these suckers better come up soon.  I am being totally impatient here I’ll have you know…. hmph…I may have to go out and buy a chive plant next month.
*Update ~ OK….REALLY bummed now! The second set did not

Pinching Back…

Pinching your sweetie’s backsi… oops, I mean.. Pinching BACK your plants!  Here in the Greenhouse I call my Living Room, we need to pay a little more attention to our sprouts than we have been.  Now that they are growing with gusto, it’s time to make them even healthier and stronger.  How to do this you ask?  By pinching back new growth (I know, it sounds counter-intuitive, just trust me), to stimulate the plant to grow MORE leaves and to become fuller, you have to ‘pinch’ off (or use scissors) new growth to get MORE new growth…I hope you follow
