I Can’t Believe He Ate The Whole Thing…

We had the pleasure of our Daughter and her Husband up to the Homestead for 9 days (they left yesterday).  While here, they enjoyed the sun, the stars, the wildlife and kayaking on the lake.

Our son-in-law is also a great cook, and I sincerely appreciated the help in cooking duties giving me some much needed breaks from the kitchen.  As their time with us was winding down, there was a mish-mash of ingredients and leftovers to do something with.  A little of this and that but not enough to make full meals out of.

So what to do them?… Read more...

How To Identify Poison Ivy…

BEFORE you come into contact with it…. Like my husband did….

One word for you…. I-T-C-H-Y!!!!!

As the Old Saying goes…’Leaves of Three, Leave them Be’.

The above plant is one of many on the Homestead, this one was trying to sprout where I planted Nasturtiums.  It has since been eliminated.  There are still many, many of them left around the property, but mostly in places we do not frequent (back bush area).  We are now highly mindful of what it looks like and where it is growing.

Hubs was trying to pull out some maple tree suckers and weeds … Read more...

How to care for your Trees…

I bet you are wondering what the heck is she doing now?  She does so much on so many different things, she can’t possibly be into the tree business too!

Relax.  I am not ‘into’ the tree business other than to keep my own trees barely pruned and alive. But sometimes I get myself into a situation where I need professional help (yeah, you can stop laughing now) with large, overgrown trees and/or limbs hanging precariously over a house, car, swimming pool or heaven forbid the beach cabana manned my Manuel the bartender.

If this happens, I call Andy.  I … Read more...

A Chipmunk’s Legacy…

Chipmunks are cute.

Chipmunks are also hoarders.

They seriously could compete with that new American T.V. show.
They need an intervention.

We have a bird feeder at the homestead…for the BIRDS….but the Chipmunks in the area insist it is there for them too.  The scamper up the tree, leap onto the feeder and then proceed to stuff their cheeks full.

Most of the bird seed is millet, cracked corn, red and white milo seeds, striped or black-oil sunflower seeds.  Chipmunk’s love ALL of them, but especially the sunflower seeds.

They scamper back and forth to their underground storage silos a … Read more...

If I could raise chickens…..

I would have plenty of fresh eggs every day.  Fresh eggs are amazing.  You know where they came from and exactly how old they are.   Something you have no idea about with the ones purchased in the store.

I would have fresh eggs for breakfast, eggs for baking my world famous chocolate chip cookies, or cakes and breads, making egg salad sandwiches, quiches and custards and of course, eggs for dying at Easter time.

But I don’t have any chickens.  Mainly because the city where I live would most certainly throw a hissy fit and demand their removal.  They … Read more...

Heirloom Pickerel Dinner

Our family loves to eat this tasty freshwater fish.  So much so that we eagerly await opening season in May and head out to *try* and catch dinner.  Sometimes we come back empty handed and therefore resort to cooking hamburgers for dinner, and of course sulk the entire time we are eating.

But when we are able to bring back some of these tasty morsels of the fish world, we are like kids at Christmas time.  Absolutely and positively excited about the dinner that is soon to hit the table.

This recipe is from my husband’s grandmother.  I was introduced … Read more...

Pickerel or Walleye….

They are called by either name depending on what side of the border you are on.  Canadians call them Pickerel.   Americans call them Walleye.  I call them DEE-LISH on my plate.  With a squeeze of lemon for good measure.

They are a freshwater fish with firm, white flesh and have been made famous by many a fishing show shorelunch excursion.  Italo…eat your heart out.

Catching a stringer full of pickerel is THE BOMB.

Yummy.  Yummy.  In my Tummy.

Depending on what lakes you visit in Ontario, there are limits as to how many you can catch/have in your possession at … Read more...

Alvin…. Alvin…. Alvin….AL-VIN!!!!

O-K!!!

Can’t you just hear it?  Dave Seville screaming Alvin’s name to get his attention?  I used to love listening to Alvin and The Chipmunk tunes….ok, I still do, just ask my kids and husband at Christmas time exactly what is the first CD I put on… It is Alvin & The Chipmunks (sheepish grin here).

So here on the homestead, I have 5 Chipmunks all screaming for my attention…well, they aren’t actually *mine*, but more so that they think *my yard* is *their yard* and raid my bird feeder and scamper up onto my feet looking for handouts 12/7 … Read more...
