Thursday’s…are ME Days…

I wake up in the middle of the night and roll over, peeking over hubby to see the clock…the green lights display 3:30 a.m….hmmm…may as well get rolling as the alarm is only going to blare in 30 minutes time anyway and hubby needs his sleep as he has been sick all week with a head cold.  Poor guy.

I creep out of bed, grab my clothes and head to the bathroom, carefully resting the bedroom door closed on my way out to minimize noise.  After getting myself ready, I head down to the kitchen and put the kettle on … Read more...

Fall into the Season

What a fabulous Summer we have had here on the Homestead.  Lots of fun things (and not so fun things…i.e. ROOFING) were done over the past few months but we definitely also took some time to enjoy the great weather and good times with family.

Now that Fall is officially here tomorrow, it’s time to clear out the summer T’s and unpack the three S’s – Sweaters, Sweatshirts & Socks (I hate socks by the way, nothing but toe smotherers they are, evil things).  But I do love to put on a cozy sweater, grab a cup of hot … Read more...

Blueberry Surprise

I bet you think this is a post about a yummy, delicious, ooey-gooey-sugary Blueberry Dessert…. Nope. Sorry to burst your bubble. Maybe tomorrow I will post one….

Today’s post is about Mother Nature being thoroughly confused.  As I write this, the date is September 17, 2012 and as I headed out for my daily walk, I didn’t get very far when I came upon this sight….

Yep….blueberry plants with flowers on them.  Loco.  Muy Loco even.  It has been a weird and stressful summer for the native plants on the Homestead.  May was dry, dry, dry.  June gave us a … Read more...

Smelly Washer Syndrome

What is that awful smell eminating from my washing machine???  It’s kinda sour, kinda musty and making my clothes smell the same way.  EEEWWWW.  GROSS.

I have never encountered this before at home in all my 35+ yrs of owning a washing machine.  Even when I washed the kids diapers it never smelled this bad…and you know what kind of nasties happen in diapers…. p-u, glad those days are over.  Back to the present though… we have no basement here at the Homestead, so the washer and dryer are located in the bathroom, which has to be about the most … Read more...

Critters around the Homestead

Every day is different here on the Homestead.  You just never know what you will encounter at any given moment.  Sometimes I am lucky to have my camera with me, sometimes not (like when we were driving in one day and a young bear cub was in the middle of the dirt road as we rounded a bend, missed that photo op), but the majority of time I have been able to drop whatever I was doing to snap a shot or two…or three…or….

Well…..You get the idea.

Here in no particular order, are various critters taken over the course … Read more...

Attack of the Aphids!

One day your plants are all happy and healthy with their flowers smiling towards the sun…the next day, they are droopy, with yellowed leaves and hanging their flowers like a dejected teen who has had his first go round of asking out a girl go horribly awry.

Upon closer inspection….. APHIDS!

Millions of the little suckers ALL over the leaves and stems sucking the life blood out of your hard earned efforts.  Plus, here I was at the Homestead, 30 minutes from the closest store and I was refusing to jump in the car wasting precious gas and spending money … Read more...

Home Remedy ~ Poison Ivy Update

Hubby & I were in the car a couple weeks ago heading from the Homestead back south when one of the radio stations we listen to along the way had listeners call in with their home remedies for Poison Ivy.  Which was extrememly appropriate given that hubby was just getting over a bout from the nasty vine.

One of the Callers said he swears by Cider Vinegar or Malt Vinegar.  Just dab some on a cotton ball and swab the affected area. What did hubs have to lose?  So he tried it….AND IT WORKED!   It took the itchness away almost … Read more...

Clouds….Are Cool…

They are never the same from one day to the next.  I am always awed about clouds and how they look.

Some are like an artist’s brushstrokes lightly swiped across the sky like so…

Others can be angry looking, sending notice to those in their path that they better take heed…

And others are just the perfect backdrop for a stunning sunset…

While some make it look like the sky is on fire…

And sometimes there are just NONE!

And then there are those pictures that sunset/scenic/trigger-happy camera people take just for the sake of it….

Somebody please take the … Read more...

Fall is Around The Corner…

I love Summer and hate to see it come to an end. I know my days of roaming around in flipflops and shorts are almost over. My wild flowers are fading and the flower heads are getting ready to scatter their seeds for next years re-birth. Even the leaves of a few Maples are already showing their Fall colours…way too early for my liking….they are pretty though.

The past couple weeks have seen the nights cool considerably here on the Homestead.  I even had to break out the sweaters on a couple days last week, much to my dismay…. and … Read more...

How To Make A Feather Pillow…

Spending time up here on the Homestead has a lot of advantages.  Like watching beautiful sunsets, reading a good book, killing ants by the millions before they invade your house and enjoying the local flora and fauna.

Not to sit around too much (idle hands makes for idle brains), I got to thinking….and I have discovered that there is a fantastic by-product to feeding the local Mallard duck population.

I have even prepared a Video Tutorial for you too. Please make sure you turn your sound up….

This project may take me several summers of feather collecting before I actually … Read more...
