Dock Dilemma

Mother Nature is beautiful.
Mother Nature is awesome.
Mother Nature can be downright nasty too.

April 7th, 2013 ~ The lake is starting to melt, notice where the water level is… DSC09411April 14th, 2013 ~ One week later, not too bad, I think the level came up an inch or two…

DSC09423April 20th, 2013 ~ A very brief and very vicious wind storm pushes the ice towards the dock, lifting and heaving it to one side.  In less than 3 minutes, tons and tons of rock in the crib were shoved aside like a child playing with marbles.

Mother Nature’s Fury

You can fight City Hall, you can lobby your Government for change, but if there is one thing that will always be a losing battle, it is trying to fight Mother Nature.  You would have more success bailing a boat with a thimble in a torrential downpour than beating the Grand Dame.

This past weekend showed us her true powers.  One day she blesses us with sunshine and warming rays, the next, she is raging with snow on 35 km winds.

Friday night the wind howled all night long, we woke up to flurries being blown sideways from the west.  … Read more...

Next Weeks Menu

For this weekend’s jaunt to the Homestead, I am packing my rubber boots, slicker, rain hat, umbrella, snow shovel, de-icing medium, ice pick and Noah’s Ark that I personally recovered from Mount Ararat…..then it is on to gathering up the critters two by two….

Noah's ArkOk….that may be a stretch on Noah’s Ark, but seriously, the weather has been so dreadful I feel like I have been transplanted to Jolly ‘Ol England this past week.  Here’s to hoping the sun makes an appearance soon, my poor garden seedlings are starving for some sunshine!!

Meanwhile, here is next week’s menu, leaning heavily … Read more...

This Week’s Menu

Last week’s menu didn’t work out as planned…we moved Tuesday’s to Friday, Friday’s to Wednesday, canceled Thursday’s outright…and I ended up changing my mind on yesterday’s too!

This coming week is going to be downright hectic as well… with all the hoopla of Easter, throw in the elbowing of crazed grandma’s to get at the best chocolate bunnies, preparing the annual Easter Paska for Easter Sunday Dinner as well as packing to spend the long weekend up at the cottage….  oh…and I think I have an actual job to do in the midst of all of the above…..I have sooooo … Read more...

Spring! Has Hopefully Arrived….

Today marks the Vernal Equinox…better known as
the First Day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

Spring CrocusAt 7:02 a.m. EDT, we march into a brand new season filled with warmer temperatures and the rebirth of flora and fauna….

Now will someone tell Old Man Winter to buzz off? I am sick of the white flurries that have been flying around the last 2 days….

Not only it is a Special Day for the beginning of Spring….but it is also a VERY Special Day in that it is also our daughter’s birthday.  Laura was born on the first day of Spring … Read more...

For The Birds…

Ugh….they have returned….

After a much needed reprieve of the past 5 months, the buzzards have come back.

To turn my outdoor space into a noisy, poop-filled rookery.  It may not seem like it, but I actually do like birds and even painted murals of birds on my bedroom walls as a youngster.  Birds are fascinating, from the regal and majestic Eagles and Ospreys’ that fish outside our front window on the Homestead, to the teensy hummingbirds that visit my feeder every summer and who doesn’t love the happy sound of the chick-a-dee-dee-dee’s as they flit from branch to branch?… Read more...

Psst….Know Anyone That Has a Canoe?

That they would be willing to give me?  I may fork out a little dough for it, but honestly, I don’t need a whole canoe…only half a canoe (so a floating one is not a necessity).

Oh…and I am picky too, it needs to be a Wooden Canoe.

Not a Fibreglass Canoe..

Nor a Kayak…

But a Real, Honest-To-Goodness Wooden Canoe…

Why you ask?
(Seriously? You have to ask? You can’t read my mind by now?)

For my bookcase of course! Duh!

 This is what I want…

Getting Old Sucks

Especially when waking up is like starting a car on a -30C day…you just can’t get yourself cranked up and running like you can when it’s warm, or in my case, when I was younger.

I used to literally bounce out of bed in the mornings, head downstairs to the stairclimber and spend 30 minutes bopping to tunes and stepping away.  Those days are seemingly over.  I would bounce out of bed now if someone dropped a bowling ball onto the other side and launched me.

Stair climbing now is heading down to the kitchen, putting the kettle on for … Read more...
