Shock and Awe….Is Bad for Plants…

Yes, it is quite easy to ‘Shock’ your plants in preparation for their final place in the garden.  There is a transition period whereby you slowly ease your plants into the great outdoors a little at a time to get them used to the harshness of the world.

When plants spend time in your sunny window in the early spring or under grow lights, they are shielded from the burning rays of the sun that can scorch their delicate leaves and stress the plant.

To acclimatize them to the outdoors, start by taking your plants outside to a shady spot, … Read more...

Frijoles Auténticos del Charro…

OR….Authentic Charro Beans…. OR Méxican ‘Drunken’ Beans…whatever you call them, they are NOTHING like your North American canned variety of baked beans.

I learned to make these while in México last year when I attended a one day cooking class lead by a highly talented Méxican Chef (Pablo Lopez Espinosa de los Monteros… I know..long name eh?) at the Little Méxican Cooking School in Puerto Morelos, México.  Not only did I learn to make these absolutely YUMMY beans, but other recipes as well including guacamoles, salsas, home-made tortillas, sopes and I think my absolute fav… rajas con crema (Chile Poblano … Read more...

And the Seller’s Market Continues….

Stats are in for April 2012 in the Hamilton-Burlington area, and no surprise, we are still experiencing lower-than-normal inventory levels for this time of year which is driving up the average sales price, specifically in Burlington.

Burlington’s Average Sales Price is up a whopping 16.5% in April 2012 as compared to April 2011. This includes both Freehold (Detached/Townhomes) and Condominiums (Townhomes/Apartments).

Burlington’s Average Sales Price in April 2011 was $395,266 and for April 2012, it jumped to $460,586.

The Average Sales Price for Hamilton did not fare as well as Burlington.  While the number of Sales was up by 2.1% … Read more...

Going Quackers…

Saturday afternoon at the cottage was, for the most part, uneventful.  I raked up some 6 wheel-barrows full of leaves from the underbrush and painstakingly picked 2 large buckets of white, decorative garden stone out of a patch of dirt I wanted to plant some flowers in while hubs tackled one of the biggest tree stumps on the lot.  This took him the better part of 4 hours of hacking, sawing, leveraging, sweating and swearing….but he finally won and the offending stump was removed and banished to the empty lot across the end of the driveway.

A little later, I … Read more...

A Gardener’s Canvas

I hope all you gardening folks are as excited as I am this Spring.  My living room window (and half the floor area) are already crowded with plants just itching to get their roots into the outdoor garden soil.

Now hold on to your green thumb for a sec,  before you get the shovel out, you need to create a layout of your garden patch.

This is where I have come across a jim-dandy web-tool to help you do just that.  No more writer’s cramp and numerous crumpled pieces of paper tossed aside while you try to perfect your ‘to … Read more...

Chic Garden Tool Organizer

HOORAY! It is Spring time! (yes, I hate winter and have been waiting for what seems like an eternity for the warm weather to get here).  With the arrival of Spring, my thoughts turn to gardening and I anxiously throw on my ‘garden grubbies’ and old sneakers and head out to the shed to dust off my garden tools…. but I can’t find them…I swore I put them right there on the shelf in the shed last Fall.  But the mysterious Winter Gremlins must have hid them on me, or my spouse ‘borrowed’ them to change the oil in the … Read more...

Sweet Potatoes in Soup? You betcha…

Today is FREEZING…so, soup is on the menu.  One that makes you think of the spices and aromas that fill the air as you stroll the ‘mercados’ in the Caribbean Islands.  I came across this recipe from of all places, the North Bay Nugget Newspaper, and of course, being the notorious recipe tweaker that I am, I just had to tweak it – cuz I know I could (and did) make it better.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Ingredients

4 Cups Chicken Broth* (preferably home-made, if store bought, get … Read more...

Jack and the Beanstalk…

Or perhaps the Giant Redwood and the Sugar Snap Pea Shoot….however you want to compare, THIS is the difference between my tomato plants and my pepper plants at the moment….
DSC05864
This Poblano Pepper plant is only about 5″ high, the Tom Tomato immediately behind it is about 2′ feet high and you could literally watch it grow if you sat in the living room long enough.  Did I mention that Pepper plants are slow growers? on the other hand, the toms look they are on steroids and I have done nothing different in raising the two types…nature of the garden
