There is another new experiment on the Homestead horizon. With deer being rampant in the area, as well as rabbits, groundhogs, birds and marauding red squirrels, I have been googling for hours/days/weeks searching for ways to fend off the pesky forest dwellers from thinking my garden is a walk-up buffet attraction or ideal stash site for acorns.
I found this one and was intrigued. The ingredients seemed common enough and easy to find and I needed something else that I can combine with the already put in place deer/bird fencing that will enclose the main raised garden bed as well as to protect the open ones.
Here’s to hoping this one works….
Deer Repellent Mixture
To 1 quart spray bottle add:
1 beaten egg
1/4 cup milk
1/4 tsp dish soap liquid
1/4 tsp vegetable oil
5 drops clove oil (available at craft or health food stores)
Water to fill container after all ingredients have been added.
It is recommended to spray this mixture once a month or after a heavy rain. I’d love for anyone else to give it a try and tell me what your experience is with repelling deer, bugs, slugs, aphids, or whatever you discover its repelling nature works on (husbands don’t count).
Meanwhile….I will report back its effectiveness (or not) in a few weeks.
Hey Deb, hope it works for you. I have a pesky porcupine eating the bark off my cherry trees, need to send out a young one to sit point.
Definitely take care of that quilly rodent, they are voracious things…hopefully the pups have not tried to go near it, lest you want a big vet bill pulling quills out of tender puppy noses 😛 I will let you know if this spray stuff works….if the neighbours would stop feeding the deer, they wouldn’t be around as much!
